Thanks Bob, those are good points. Of course it is a pendulum, not all one side or the other. But I do see them move back to in house development, compared to where it was 15 or 20 years ago.
Wonderful post Frank- particularly like the history and challenging the soundness of "you're not a software company"! The reasons for doing it and the enablers are clearly laid out plus reference to the org commitment to an in-house software group and risk awareness if an acquisition/investment target that are required if you go this route.
